My group chose a political cartoon from the magazine, Puck, for our assignment on yellow journalism. This magazine often published satirical criticism of yellow journalism. Our particular cartoon was satirical of the printing press. We discussed the printing press in class and the use of yellow journalism. Our cartoon was titled, “The Evil Spirits of the Modern Day Press” and depicted demon-like creatures emerging from a press as things such as “scandals” and “cheap sensations”. Yellow journalism’s focus was to intrigue and influence readers no matter what was printed. This cartoon highlights these discrepancies in the press quite clearly.
